New expansion promises faster temperature-controlled eCommerce fulfillment in Texas.RLS Logistics, the Cold Chain Experts, expansion takes aim at 1 to 2 day D2C fulfillment nationally.
(Newfield, New Jersey – November 16, 2020) – RLS Logistics, a leading third-generation family-owned provider of cold chain solutions, announced a service expansion in Terrell, TX, to handle temperature-controlled direct to consumer fulfillment. The move expands the RLS footprint for its temperature-controlled D2C fulfillment services while enhancing capabilities in the region. What it means for many D2C start-ups and established eCommerce companies is that they can now reach 95% of the U.S. population with a 2-day ground service and 27% within one day. This strategic location aligns with RLS’s vision of building a strong national network. “Texas is a tremendous market. There’s significant population growth in that area. This addition allows us to spine the country with three strategic fulfillment locations for our customers,” says Ken Johnson, Chief Operating Officer of RLS Warehousing Group. RLS’s southern expansion was spurred by current and prospective customers wanting to work with one provider with a national footprint. “Companies are asking ‘can you support our growth, and can you get it to my customer in one to two days at the proper temperature?’” Explains Janine Dunlap, Business Development Coordinator for Fulfillment & Cold Storage for RLS Logistics. “That’s the model we’re trying to build: to grow with our D2C customers to get to their customers quicker, preferably within one day.” RLS’s scalability to handle growth combined with the benefit of working with one partner provides much-needed advantages to D2C companies seeking a national footprint. According to Dunlap, as companies rush to deliver to new markets, they benefit from the simplicity RLS provides. “It’s easier to manage all your inventory through one technology platform. Plus, with RLS, all the analytics are in place, and you’re only dealing with one accountable team,” Dunlap explains. THE RLS COLD FRONT, ISSUE 1October SummaryWelcome to the first edition of The Cold Front, presented by RLS Logistics, the Cold Chain Experts. This monthly summary highlights the pertinent cold chain market data in one concise location. As cold chain experts, we want to ensure that you have the data you need to make better decisions to fuel your growth. We hope you find this information useful! If you would like data to your specific market, click the link below. Reefer Spot RatesReefer spot rates have been on a steady climb since July. Compared to October 2019, the green shaded areas indicate relatively loose reefer capacity where shippers realize lower rates. The red shaded areas indicate tight capacity and significantly higher transportation rates. In late March, the lockdowns reduced the demand for trucking, and the results drove rates below the market baseline. As states began to open back up and many carriers parked their trucks, demand drove spot pricing up approximately 37%. We have seen a stabilization in spot rates in October. This could be an indicator that we have reached the peak. Reefer Market ConditionsThe map below details reefer hot freight markets where capacity is tight and rates are higher. Areas in Orange to Red indicate a high load to truck ratio. Blue to Green areas indicates more loose capacity where there are more trucks than loads. Keep an eye on this map monthly as it is a good indicator of when crop harvesting affects trucking capacity. WarehousingThe below graph indicates the national overall warehousing capacity for reefer and dry commodities for the previous month. Using the baseline from October 2019, warehousing capacity remains tight nationally. OUR MISSIONTo provide professional supply chain solutions to the frozen & refrigerated food industry by offering safe and reliable warehousing, transportation and packaging services. © 2010 – 2020 RLS Managed Services, LLC The post The RLS Cold Front, Issue 1 appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger The RLS Cold Front, Issue 1 RLS assembles dynamic team to guide national expansion(Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – September 30, 2020) – RLS Logistics, a leading provider of cold chain solutions, and its affiliates announced a string of new hires and promotions supporting its national expansion plans. The moves include co-founding RLS Partners with Tom Casey, a noted business leader, entrepreneur, and veteran of the cold storage industry. His involvement is bolstered by promoting another industry leader, Ken Johnson, to Chief Operating Officer, RLS Warehousing Group and Ron Pack, Vice President, Technology.
These moves further RLS’ goal to provide food manufacturers and entrepreneur-led cold storage companies an unprecedented platform and national network. The changes within the RLS organizations are designed to support the entrepreneurial spirit and family values at the core of the RLS PRO Program.
Tom Casey, Chief Investment Officer, RLS Partners Casey brings over thirty years’ leadership experience as CEO, CFO, board member, and banker. His industry expertise extends from consumer business and food manufacturing to cold storage and investment banking. As the CIO of RLS Partners, Casey oversees the allocated capital to acquire and develop cold chain businesses in the United States and Canada. Before joining RLS Partners, he was a co-founder, CIO, and CFO of Emergent Cold, which he built into a top 10 global cold storage business. Casey developed his financial leadership skills and cool head as an investment banker at leading firms, including Dillon, Read & Co, Merrill Lynch, Salomon Brothers (Citigroup), and Deutsche Bank—as well as during his time serving in the Navy aboard a nuclear submarine. Casey brings the right financial and entrepreneurial skillset to his new role helming the company’s national expansion. And as a father of six, RLS’ family values are second nature to him.
Johnson is a cold storage industry veteran who has moved through the ranks from his prior position as RLS’ Executive Vice President, Warehousing Group. In addition to his current responsibilities, he will also oversee the integration and operations of the new Partnering Regional Operators (PROs) in RLS’ national network by sharing best practices and implementing operational standards. In doing so, Johnson will continue what he’s already been doing successfully for current RLS locations.
Scaling the network of family-operated facilities is a natural for Johnson. From his 26-year tenure at MTC Logistics, he has decades of experience in cold chain optimization, operations management, freight, team member development, and warehouse operations. Prior to joining RLS, Johnson served as MTC Logistics’ Senior Vice President of Operations.
RLS Logistics’ Director of IT, Ronald Pack, has been promoted to Vice President of Technology. In this newly-created position, Pack will oversee the technology integrations at each PRO location, including implementing RLS’ Anello online customer portal at each site.
RLS’ robust technology stack provides the PROs with tools for growing their business and increasing their competitiveness. Pack is charged with making it happen by getting the PROs converted to a single technology platform. Unified technology is a key capability that large cold storage providers leverage, and it’s one that food manufacturers need to expand distribution while maintaining inventory visibility. That makes Pack’s role paramount to the success of the PRO Program. He brings a valued combination of IT chops and industry insight.
Edward Shehwen, Vice President of Acquisitions, RLS Partners
Shehwen’s primary focus is the nationwide expansion plan that was recently announced. He has over eight years of experience working in the financial industry. This experience supports his role in acquisitions and includes financial modeling, due diligence, forecasting and budgeting. His past roles include 5 years at a global investment bank and several more at a small investment company. Shehwen graduated from Georgetown University in 2012. He is a natural team leader and lateral thinker. “I’ve always believed that if you get enough smart people in a room, good things happen,” he says. “When I look around at RLS Logistics and RLS Partners, I think we’re off to a good start.”
Sherry Everett, Billing Supervisor, RLS Logistics
The consummate RLS’er, Everett sees her personal vision of integrity, family and growth as paralleling RLS’ mission. “As with RLS, family is the most important thing,” she says. “My family is what drives my ambition.” The ambition has pushed Everett to specialize in billing for both freight brokerage and consolidated freight. It’s also let to successive promotions over her past seven years with RLS. Before being promoted to billing supervisor, she was a billing specialist and a billing team lead.
Collin Krall, Key Account Business Development Coordinator, RLS Logistics
With a relatively new bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing from Temple University, Krall has continuously outperformed his quota and quickly risen through the ranks at RLS Logistics. His internship with The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia taught him the critical role of community in business. “Like RLS, I am very focused on doing what’s best for our people,” Krall explains. “I admire RLS for finding solutions that best fit the people we are responsible for, whether it be our customers or employees, we are focused on making it work for them by being flexible and empathic to their struggles, aspirations and goals.”
With the PRO business model in place, people are the key to getting the execution correct. Tony Leo, CEO, RLS Warehousing Group, explains, “Promoting these individuals and partnering with the best people in the industry aligns with our strategic plan and long term vision for RLS. I am confident their belief in our cultural values of being humble, hungry, and smart will help the PRO Program to succeed and our customers to thrive in the coming years.”

Laurel, New Jersey – September 2, 2020) – RLS Logistics, a leading third-generation provider of cold chain solutions, through its affiliate RLS Partners, recently welcomed Gress Refrigerated Services & Logistics, Scranton, PA, as the newest RLS Partnering Regional Operator (PRO) and member of the RLS network of cold chain solutions providers. Gress, a third–generation, family-owned company brings over 40 years of cold chain experience. A leading cold storage provider in the Northeast Pennsylvania region, Gress offers multiple facility locations in the area, multiple temperature zones, asset-based transportation services, LTL consolidation, and other value-added services. With the addition of Gress, RLS adds 365,000 square feet of temperature-controlled warehousing with capacity for 38,600 pallet positions. Gress brings connections and expertise, serving the cold chain needs of food manufacturers, importers, and distributors, to the RLS network of family-owned cold storage providers. Their participation adds to an already strong network of cold chain 3PLs to customers wishing to distribute frozen or refrigerated products in the region. “We are very excited to become part of RLS , a national leader in cold chain warehousing and transportation solutions. As a family-owned business, partnering with RLS is a natural fit because we share the same values and commitments,” said Glenn Gress, President of Gress Refrigerated Services. The addition of Gress is part of RLS’ focus on building a top tier network of family-owned cold storage providers who are regional leaders. RLS PROs like Gress feature qualities family-run businesses are known for: responsive customer service, strong customer relationships, commitment, and entrepreneurialism. For expansion-minded food manufacturers used to working with family-run warehouses, this new network provides a welcome alternative to national conglomerates. “Gress’ success demonstrates its commitment to maintaining long-standing relationships with its customers. This makes them an ideal complement to our network of top regional family-run cold storage providers. We welcome them to our family and are excited about our future together,” said Tony Leo, CEO of RLS Warehousing Group.

The post Gress Refrigerated Services joins RLS Partners growing national network of family-run cold storage providers. appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger Gress Refrigerated Services joins RLS Partners growing national network of family-run cold storage providers. New joint venture provides customers and family-owned cold storage companies with entrepreneur-led platform.RLS Logistics, a third-generation cold chain solutions provider in the U.S., recently created a joint venture that will offer customers the ability to work with regional family-run cold storage providers on a national basis. The cornerstone of the plan is to partner with existing best-in-class operators in ten to twelve megaregions of the U.S., as well as Eastern and Western Canada. These operators, referred to as Partnering Regional Operators (PROs), will maintain significant equity in their respective regions and will continue to oversee operations, customer relationships, and team member development. As RLS builds out this network, food manufacturers will be able to expand into new markets with the benefit of trusted relationships, hands-on involvement, and the commitment of a family-run company. Small- and medium-sized manufacturers of frozen and refrigerated foods will now have an entrepreneur-led alternative to the larger and more bureaucratic providers. “Food producers who are used to dealing directly with the owner of the business will be able to continue that tradition. Customer relationships and customized solutions are at the foundation of our business model, and we believe keeping key business decisions local will speed our responsiveness and differentiate our offering,” explains Tony Leo, CEO of RLS Logistics, Warehousing Group. Today over 60% of public cold storage operations in the U.S. are owned by only a handful of companies. After seeing the impact of consolidation in the cold chain industry in recent years, RLS decided it was time to innovate and create a better alternative for its customers. “For manufacturers that are too small to be a priority at a larger provider, the RLS network provides the ideal combination of responsive service and scalability,” says RLS Chief Investment Officer, Tom Casey. “There are multiple opportunities to invest capital for new facilities, acquisitions, and other growth initiatives with our regional partners and their customers.” Through this new program, RLS is combining the regional expertise and commitment of successful family-owned companies with the capital resources of a much larger provider. “There are a lot of small- and medium-sized companies who want to do business with a network of family-owned service providers,” said Russell Leo, CEO of Transportation for RLS Logistics. “This especially allows mid-market food manufacturers carrying multiple inventories access to reliable family-owned cold storage where they will be able to get the service levels they require.” Today, family-owned operators must decide between competing with the larger providers or joining forces with them. RLS’ approach is designed to appeal to owners who want to continue to play a vital role in the company strategy and maintain their autonomy—in other words, keep doing what they love. The agile nature of family-owned cold chain companies and their sharing of best practices in the new RLS network could be just what food manufacturers need. Together with proven transportation programs, modern facilities, and integrated technology, customers will have access to a new distribution network with the benefits of an entrepreneurial partner. The post RLS Logistics Announces Nationwide Expansion Plan. appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger RLS Logistics Announces Nationwide Expansion Plan. RLS Logistics, a leading provider of cold chain solutions, announced today it received food safety certification through the British Retail Consortium Global Standard (BRCGS), garnering the highest AA rating for at every one of its five cold storage facilities and for its distribution network. BRCGS certification is an internationally recognized distinction awarded to companies in the food storage and distribution industries that meet BRC Standards of best practices for quality, hygiene, and product safety. BRC is one of the most highly regarded certification programs recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). To attain certification, each facility operated by RLS Logistics underwent a third-party audit of everything from quality management and risk analysis to building standards and vehicle operations. “BRC is one of the most challenging certifications to earn. When you receive a certification from a renowned program like theirs, it supports client trust,” remarked Jose Maldonado, Quality, Safety and Compliance Manager at RLS Logistics. “It means you’re adhering to best practices, not just in the US, but across the globe—and that you’re adhering to the same standards as the best companies around the world.” BRC awards certificate grades of AA (the best), A, B, C, or D depending on the number and type of nonconformities that the audit reveals. RLS Logistics earned the AA grade for its distribution network as well as its facilities in Delanco, NJ; Newfield, NJ, Vineland, NJ; Pittston, PA; and Salt Lake, UT. Food Safety certifications are voluntary in some industries, and companies are allowed to choose their own certification body. As a result, many companies opt for one with less stringent audit standards. RLS’s decision to take the hard road highlights the company’s leadership in food safety. “Customers recognize our commitment to food safety. Protecting their brand is a top priority,” RLS Vice President of Business Development, John Gaudet explains. “BRC is a top tier accreditation organization, and our philosophy has always been to be a step ahead of the industry standard.” RLS’s forward stance helped the company quickly implement government rules mandated to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “Being BRC certified definitely gave us a leg up. The system already audits for hygiene or GMPs, so we already had a procedure in place,” Maldonado said. “All we did was add some contingencies to make sure we followed the elements that have been discovered during the COVID the outbreak. The big difference was in supplies in terms of PPE and sanitation, which we had to increase to assure our people’s safety.” Certifications and outside audits play an important role in helping manufacturers protect the public and prevent a recall that damages brand and business. With the significant role third-party logistics providers play in food manufacturers’ supply chains, companies now find themselves responsible for auditing their 3PL’s operations as well. One of the significant benefits of BRC certification is that it saves companies the time and expense of auditing service providers. For RLS clients, Maldonado says that BRC certification can turn what would otherwise be an involved process into a more passive process where customers review the confirming of the certificate, the audit report, and checking the corrective action completion. By sharing our audit results and corrective actions, it reduces our customers’ needs for extensive onsite audits, resulting in less time spent onboarding new customers, Gaudet added. Saving its customers’ time took time. Although RLS Logistics has received varying grades of BRC certification for its facilities over the past 5 years, this is the first time the company has received AA grades across the board. “It’s a team effort. Everyone in the organization is committed to food safety; it starts with a commitment from leadership and cascades throughout every position in every business unit. Maldonado stated. The post RLS Logistics Earns Illustrious BRC Food Safety Certification appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger RLS Logistics Earns Illustrious BRC Food Safety Certification New temperature-controlled LTL service helps shippers avoid fines from retailersManufacturers of frozen and refrigerated products pay the price to do business with big retailers. Today, food producers face unprecedented pressure to deliver within narrow timeframes or face steep penalties as well as dings to their scorecard when they fail. To help manufacturers deliver on time and avoid these downsides, RLS Logistics recently took the lead in the industry by unveiling day-specific temperature-controlled less-than-truckload (LTL) service to select grocery warehouses nationwide with no up-charges. According to RLS Vice President, Business Development, John Gaudet, “RLS is raising the bar for temperature-controlled LTL distribution by offering a service other carriers and transportation providers won’t because they’re not willing to risk it or upset their established schedules. By committing to day-specific service, we’re making a commitment to our partners and putting skin in the game.” As retail and foodservice chains continue to look for ways to reduce inventory costs at distribution centers, they are applying just-in-time (JIT) inventory strategies beyond dry goods to a host of perishable items. Manufacturers of frozen or refrigerated products who want to do business with big retailers have to play by new rules. Those who can’t deliver are incurring hefty fines—up to 3% of the shipment value in some cases. But shippers’ options for meeting the new requirements are limited. The traditional full truck-load (FTL) alternative is costly. While “buying the whole truck” provides shippers the ability to achieve specific delivery days, the price is usually unjustified, especially given retailers’ desire to receive smaller shipments more often with JIT. Accomplishing the feat of picking up perishable products nationwide, moving them safely across the country and delivering them to retailers on a set delivery day is an achievement that has been years in the making. According to Gaudet, “We’ve been building our model since the early ’90s. The network built over that time has allowed us the sheer volume to be able to do it. It’s also a product of our cold chain experience and knowledge—and our technological advancement has been a huge factor as well.” As the retail industry strives for more efficiency, RLS is banking on day-specific delivery. “This is where the industry wants it to go, and there are many other retailers out there that are establishing similar policies,” Gaudet says. “It took some time for the big ship to turn, but you’re going to see more and more retailers and foodservice organizations go that direction—including smaller ones.” For growth-minded manufacturers, day-specific delivery is becoming the price of entry for landing and maintaining lucrative contracts with large retailers. Rather than just providing a new cost of doing business, RLS’s service provides a value that supports the manufacturer’s bottom line. In addition to reducing the cost of late penalties and fees, RLS’s day-specific service is priced competitively. “It’s not going to cost more than traditional LTL,” Gaudet explains. “So when you couple in the reasonable price with the value, it’s a no-brainer.” Through the planned expansion of its day-specific service to more foodservice and retail distribution centers throughout the U.S., RLS is on track for raising the bar for temperature-controlled LTL service standards for the entire industry. The post 10 Tips for Being Productive at Your Home Office appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger 10 Tips for Being Productive at Your Home Office How One Logistics Provider is Making Every Pallet Move a More Moving ExperienceRLS Logistics introduces Pallets 4 Plates program to benefit communities and food insecure families nationally. It’s not uncommon for companies to support great charitable causes and experience the powerful benefits of shared purpose and pride it creates. The question has always been, how do you keep a good thing going after the coat drive is completed and last matching contribution is paid? RLS Logistics, a national third-party logistics provider, specializing in temperature-controlled logistics, has solved the sustainability challenge through a new giving program that taps into the very essence of their work moving pallets. In doing so they’ve created a unique way to give back and inspire team members throughout the day, every day. With RLS Logistics’ new Pallets 4 Plates program, every pallet moved by the company triggers a charitable donation. In 2019, that amounted to 305,500 plates of food supplied to charities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Utah that include Food Cowboy and the Food Bank of South Jersey. In addition, equivalent cash contributions have also been made to YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Baker’s Club of Philadelphia, American Heart Association, numerous local schools and youth sports teams. The program involves team members throughout the organization in the effort. Pallets 4 Plates leverages the idea that it takes a team to move a pallet. Every team member in each business unit and the department has a part in the program. “We move pallets, it’s what we do. Whether it’s being received or shipped or billed, at the end of the day, everyone can all relate to a pallet,” says RLS President & CEO, Warehousing Group, Anthony M. Leo. Pallets 4 Plates gives everyone in the RLS organization a role in that shared purpose. Every pallet they move directly or indirectly through their work helps families in need put food on the table or sponsors mentorship programs for at-risk kids. This feature makes the Pallets 4 Plates program as powerful as it is unique. With Pallets 4 Plates, every task and workflow related to the supply chain counts, and everyone plays a role over the long-haul. “For every 4 pallets that our team members move, we donate 1 plate of food with this program,” Leo describes. That makes moving the pallet count a motivator to every team member of the RLS supply chain and for everyone up and down the organization chart. The idea for Pallets 4 Plates grew organically from RLS team members who witnessed countless incidents where good food was being thrown out due to damaged boxes or ordering mistakes. They started to wonder how to get those foodstuffs to people in need. After searching for options, the RLS team discovered Food Cowboy, an organization dedicated to matching unmarketable food with food charities. “It was really the initiative of a few team members saying, ‘why are we wasting so much food, and is there something we could be doing differently as a company when there are so many needy people who could use it?” Asking those questions led to the partnership with Food Cowboy and set the table for contributions to additional food and community-focused charities. The theme of food and community runs throughout RLS’s 52-year history and humble beginnings as mushroom farmers. The family-owned company has deep ties to the communities it serves. And these communities continue to expand across the U.S. through their growing network of cold storage facilities and transportation services in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Utah. “There are families in need all around us. They can be anyone in the community and you wouldn’t necessarily know it,” Leo says. “Pallets 4 Plates ties into our roots as a company and our culture and way of looking after our community.” RLS Logistics team members are looking to make a bigger impact than ever this year. The company’s growth mode means more pallets will move and more plates will be donated. With the company’s consistent year-over-year growth and continuous national expansion, more families in more communities everywhere stand to benefit. ### The post How One Logistics Provider is Making Every Pallet Move a More Moving Experience appeared first on RLS Logistics. via Blogger How One Logistics Provider is Making Every Pallet Move a More Moving Experience With more than 30,000 pallets passing through RLS Logistics’ LTL cross dock on a monthly basis, and demand rising, RLS has increased the size of their cross dock from 45,000 square feet to 70,000 square feet at their Newfield, NJ location. “Our temperature-controlled, BRC certified cross dock helps maintain our customers’ products at the proper temperature throughout the cold chain. Once pallets arrive at our cross dock they are scanned, sorted and stored until they are loaded and shipped to their proper destination,” said Greg Quast, Vice President of Operations, Freight Consolidation. Cross dock services reduce warehousing cost, shorten delivery lead times and increase efficiency. RLS Logistics’ Freight Consolidation division offers two services; the first specializes in frozen and refrigerated LTL shipments originating from the Northeast shipping to all 48 states on a set sailing schedule. The second is a cross docking program. “Between the implementation of ELDs and costly fines from receivers, we have seen our cross dock program grow more rapidly than in any other time in our history”, Quast said. He also added “Shippers and carriers from across the country are able to drop off their frozen and/or refrigerated LTL shipments at our cross dock in Newfield and we can then deliver them throughout the Northeast on a set schedule. This allows their trucks to make one delivery into the Northeast and eliminate delivering to multiple consignees, which improves their bottom line”.
